Mobile ads are a tough sale I think. But in the end, I think that it comes down to a combination of presentation and content.

MOBILE ADVERTISING IS STARTING TO gain traction–but won’t make up a significant portion of mobile content revenues for at least three more years, say wireless industry executives.

Paid content such as music downloads or data subscription services will continue to be the primary revenue sources for mobile media in the near term, according to executives on the “Weighing Mobile Models for Publishers” panel at the OMMA conference on Tuesday.
But within the last year, marketers have begun to spend noticeably more on mobile advertising, said Tom Burgess, CEO of mobile media ad network Third Screen Media. He said that the company’s sales had grown 250 percent over each of the last three quarters, indicating that marketers are directing increasing amounts of their ad budgets to mobile media….

Leather cases were considered the ’suit version’ of aluminum hard cases for a long time - has changed that. But let’s see how the case fares in a review:

Proporta’s case ships in a classic blister for leather cases. A belt clip is contained, too.

The case itself looks cool, although the leather looks a bit beaten up after unpacking.

Inserting the Treo 600 into the case isn’t easy - you need to press the machine in firmly. Over time, this will scratch the side of your smartphone…

The magnetic closure mechanism works very well… if you remove the foil first.

The front of the case has a cutout for the LED.

It also contains a slot for a single memory card.

The camera becomes available when you pull the lid down a bit. Impressively, sound isn’t muffled - however, the reset button isn’t accessible from the outside (thank Palm for the ’self-reset on fatal alert skills’ of the Treo series).

The lid can be flipped all the way to the back for a truly excellent typing experience - no other case works that well.

This case fits a Treo 650, too - so if you want to upgrade, the case follows along.

Overall, if you like leather cases and don’t need the reset hole, this case is what you need. People who type very much will probably like it, too. The price of $34.95 is justified if you can live with the problems mentioned above.

Just when you thought that there couldn’t possibly be another thumb-style keyboard available for the Palm, I’m here to tell you that you’re wrong! Seiko Instruments, Inc. has its own thumb board for the Palm V/Vx, m500, m505, and m515 that has been conveniently named the Thumboard. I was sent the m505 version to review.

When the box arrived I could hardly wait to get it open. And I was not disappointed. the PDA slides into the device, allowing you to use your thumbs to type on the small keyboard while holding it between your two hands.

Let me start at the beginning. When you first receive the Thumboard, you get the accessory itself, an instruction manual (which you don’t really need), a floppy disk containing the driver software (but since my PC doesn’t have a floppy drive, I went ahead and downloaded the driver directly from Seiko’s Web site), and a postcard you can use to get a free carrying case for your Palm/Thumboard Combo (I just sent this in). Just install the driver to your handheld, attach the Thumboard, and you’re ready to go. I mean that in the literal sense.

Since the Thumboard covers the entire Graffiti area, you won’t be able to use “sliding hacks” while you’re using this accessory. However, Seiko did include function keys that allow you to access both the silkscreen buttons and the four hard buttons on the front of the unit. I also found that the Thumboard, while made of plastic, seems durable enough to hold up to long use. The keys are easy to press, although people with very large thumbs may find the key spacing to be a little cramped (I found it comfortable to hold and use). Using the keyboard to type up memos and notes was quick and easy. I really didn’t have much trouble with the keyboard layout. The only key that felt like it was out of place was the ENTER key.

The Thumboard is so convenient that I can use it anywhere, even when I don’t have a table available for the full-size keyboard. For portable data entry, my choice from now on will be my new Thumboard. It’s a lot less annoying than Graffiti, even though I’ve had a few weeks of experience with it as opposed to almost eight years worth with Graffiti. You might want to try the Thumboard and see if it meets your needs.

I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again – I do not think that these sideshow type domains have squat worth of value.

The general public could begin signing up Tuesday for their own .mobi wireless Internet domain names so their sites could be viewable on cell phones and other mobile devices.
The general registration began with the “land rush” on Tuesday, followed by a standard general registration on October 11.
The organization managing .mobi is Mobile Top Level Domain, also known as dotMobi, a Dublin-based joint venture backed by a number of tech heavyweights, including Microsoft, Google, Vodafone, Ericsson, Samsung Electronics, Hutchison 3, T-Mobile, Telfonica Moviles, and Nokia.
“In the past, using the Internet on a mobile device presented huge obstacles for the consumer,” dotMobi CEO Neil Edwards said in a statement. “We’re creating a link between mobile operators, Internet content providers, and the millions of mobile users seeking a consistent, reliable, and enjoyable Internet experience….

So basically, the future of the mobile is crap? Ah, this sounds simple enough to me…

Mobile companies have been watching the rapid growth of networking and video-sharing websites such as MySpace and YouTube. They have realised that content created by users themselves might be just what they need to persuade their customers to do more with their phones than make calls and send text messages.

The mobile industry has spent billions of pounds on licences to run new services over 3G networks, and reassured nervous investors that the future of mobiles in markets where everyone already has a phone is based on customers downloading videos and accessing the internet. But the take-up of such products has been slack…
