iPod Nano commercial the Apple of singer Feist's eye (Reuters)
NEW YORK (Billboard) - The use of Canadian singer-songwriter Feist's song "1, 2, 3, 4" in an iPod Nano TV spot is generating major attention — online and on the Billboard charts. ADVERTISEMENT
Since the ad debuted in mid-September, sales of "1, 2, 3, 4" and its parent Cherrytree/Interscope album, "The Reminder," have skyrocketed. Earlier this month, the track was selling about 2,000 downloads per week, while the album was shifting 6,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan. On the most recent charts, "1, 2, 3, 4" clears 73,000 downloads and reaches new peaks of No. 7 on Hot Digital Songs and No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. "The Reminder" jumps from No. 36 to No. 28 on the Billboard 200, with sales of 19,000. In total, "1, 2, 3, 4" and "The Reminder" have amassed sales of 181,000 and 235,000, respectively. (Feist's debut album, 2005's "Let It Die," has sold 147,000 copies.) While the iPod Nano spot is introducing Feist to mainstream America, online chatter is paving the way to sales of the singer's music. Feist is not identified in the campaign — created by TBWA/Media Arts Lab — and this has led many consumers to the Web in search of the voice behind the song in the commercial. According to Nielsen BuzzMetrics — which monitored such search terms as "1234," "iPod," "Nano" and "campaign" — Web discussion is increasing by triple-digit percentages weekly. In the days following the singer's August 27 appearance on "Late Show With David Letterman," where she performed "1, 2, 3, 4," online buzz increased 190 percent. On the heels of Labor Day weekend, discussion of the iPod Nano ad soared 402 percent. One week later, there was a 166 percent spike in discussion. Feist is the latest in a string of Interscope acts to appear in iPod/Apple commercials, including the Fratellis, Wolfmother, Eminem and U2. And while bloggers have fueled rumors of a "deal" between the companies, Interscope Geffen A&M president of marketing and sales Steve Berman denied any such thing. (Apple and TBWA/Media Arts Lab declined to comment.) "We have a great working relationship with them," Berman said. "We are a company with much music that can be construed as left-of-center." Mountain Bike Hits 130.7 MPH … on Snow
33 year old Austrian Markus Stoeckl has smashed the World Speed Record for series mountain bikes. Stoeckl, nicknamed “Hercules” because of his 6′4″, 220 lbs. frame, broke the 8 year old record by 14 mph on a 2000 meter, 45 degree run in the Chilean Alps. Because of the extreme cold, Hercules had to hold his breath for the 40 second duration so his helmet didn’t fog up.
Crazy, indeed, but we wonder how on Earth he stopped. Those disc brakes were surely useless.

Microsoft’s SideWinder gaming mouse gets reviewed
We know, Microsoft’s of the SideWinder brought back fond memories for most us of, but with all the already in the gaming mouse niche, it’s going to take a bit more than fuzzy feelings to get our $80. Thankfully, the folks over at I4U News spent some quality time with the new SideWinder mouse, and after realizing that it looks a bit gentler in person, they proceeded to crank through hours of gaming to see how it fared. Notably, the LCD screen was dubbed “actually useful,” the 2,000dpi was said to be “plenty of sensitivity,” and the thumb buttons were deemed “perfect from a tactile feedback perspective.” Still, reviewers found more hype than substance in the Quick Turn button, and while the scroll wheel seemed “great for gaming,” it wasn’t as friendly during everyday tasks. Nevertheless, the crew awarded the revived critter a very generous nine out of ten stars, but if you’ve still got your doubts, hit the read link and check out the full skinny.
30 years later, Bob Marley's "Exodus" returns (Reuters)
NEW YORK (Billboard) - The enduring importance of Bob Marley's music was underscored when Fifty Six Hope Road Music, the Marley family-owned company that holds the rights to his music, recently announced an impending lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG) and Verizon Wireless. ADVERTISEMENT
The Marleys maintain that an exclusive deal reached between those companies, with the objective of turning several Marley hits into ringtones, "was not in accordance with Marley's longstanding contract with Universal Music Group." Verizon, for its part, removed but has since re-added the ringtones. But the estate and UMG are working in tandem to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Marley & the Wailers' "Exodus," due October 16 via Tuff Gong/Island Records/UMe. The album will be available as a single CD or in a two-disc set with the "Live at the Rainbow" DVD. (An earlier "deluxe edition" of the album, supplemented by alternate tracks, was released in 2001.) College students will be the target audience for these releases, and theatrical screenings of "Live at the Rainbow," which documents Marley's June 1977 Exodus tour performances at London's Rainbow Theater, are scheduled for key college territories. "The college market is a prime target because that's when people really start discovering new music," UMe general manager Mike Davis said. Originally released June 3, 1977, by Island, "Exodus" was designated the album of the century by Time magazine in its January 4, 2000, issue. Recorded at London's Basing Street Studios during the 14 months Marley spent in exile there following the December 1976 attempt on his life at his Kingston, Jamaica, home, "Exodus" is the only Marley album entirely recorded outside Jamaica. It's more diverse than his previous releases, drawing on dub elements, disco and soft R&B balladry as well as Marley's quintessential roots reggae. "You can hear a percussive African influence," said Marley's son Stephen, whose debut solo album, "Mind Control," debuted earlier this year at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Reggae Albums chart. "You could tell he really (did) deal with reggae universally; that is how he approached the music and the message." In Marley's lifetime, "Exodus" was his most successful release. It spent 56 consecutive weeks on the U.K. charts and spawned three top 40 U.K. hits. In the United States, the singles "Exodus" and "Waiting in Vain" reached Nos. 19 and 38, respectively, on Billboard's R&B singles chart. "Bob was in love and generally happy, and that was expressed on the album," Island Records founder Chris Blackwell said. The label released 10 Marley albums before his death in 1981 and several posthumous works — including 1984's "Legend," which has sold more than 9.2 million copies since 1991, when Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales data. "Thirty years later, 'Exodus' won't generate the excitement of a new release," Blackwell said. "But I am hopeful we can sell a good amount and bring recognition to how important an artist Bob Marley is." Reuters/Billboard
CORRECTED: Apple lowers costs of iPod Nano parts: iSuppli (Reuters)
Following a correction from iSuppli, in Sept 19 story, paragraph 6, removes reference to Cypress being dropped as a supplier for the new Apple iPod nano and adds the iSuppli statement, paragraphs 8-10. ADVERTISEMENT
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) new iPod Nano portable music and video player boasts lower component costs than the previous version, market research firm iSuppli said on Wednesday. The bill of materials for the iPod Nano was $58.85 for the version with 4 gigabytes of flash memory and $82.85 for the model with 8 gigabytes of memory, iSuppli said. The two models retail for $149 and $199, but the report only measured the cost of the Nano's parts and did not include other costs such as manufacturing, packaging or research and development, iSuppli said. Total component costs for the 4-gigabyte Nano were nearly 19 percent lower than the previous version released in late 2006, iSuppli said. The new devices, which went on sale earlier this month as part of a pre-holiday overhaul of the iPod line, also featured parts from several new suppliers, most notably U.S. memory chip maker Micron Technology Inc (MU.N). Other new suppliers included Intersil Corp (ISIL.O) and Synaptics Inc (SYNA.O), while components from NXP Semiconductors were dropped, iSuppli said. "Such wholesale supplier swaps are not unusual for Apple, which frequently switches its component partners. With Apple, it seems, no supplier is safe, and no slot is a given," iSuppli said. ISuppli had said on September 19 that components from Cypress Semiconductor Corp (CY.N) were also dropped but on Friday, September 28, iSuppli issued a statement saying Cypress's click wheel controller chip was still in some of the new nanos. "We indicated that Cypress Semiconductor Corp had lost its position as the supplier of the click wheel controller chip to Synaptics Inc. This was incorrect," iSuppli said. "Based on additional samples evaluated by iSuppli, it is now clear that there are samples of the new Apple iPod nano with either Cypress or Synaptics click wheel controllers." Apple continued to use an audio and video processor from South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS), iSuppli said. ISuppli said it expected Apple to sell 23 million Nanos this year and nearly 28 million in 2008. (Reporting by Scott Hillis and Georgina Prodhan)

NHL unfairly controls teams' Web sites: lawsuit (Reuters)
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The National Hockey League is violating antitrust laws by seeking to control the Web sites that promote its teams, Madison Square Garden, home of the New York Rangers, charged in a lawsuit filed on Friday. ADVERTISEMENT
The lawsuit seeks to block the league from imposing a $100,000-per-day fine on the Garden, which along with the Rangers, is owned by Cablevision Systems Corp. The league promised to impose the fine, starting on Friday, if the Rangers did not hand over "virtually complete control" of the Web site , the suit said. The suit said the league had violated state and federal antitrust laws by planning to create 30 "cookie-cutter club Web sites" that it will link to its main site, , according to the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in New York. The Garden, which is not seeking punitive damages, said it had spent six years cultivating a sophisticated and popular Rangers Web site, which includes video clips from games and access to team merchandise. "The NHL has no competitive justification for seizing the Rangers Web site, which MSG today uses as a competitive tool to generate and maintain fan interest in the Rangers in competition with other NHL teams," the lawsuit said. A spokesman for the NHL did not have an immediate comment. Earlier this year, the NHL fined the Garden $100,000 a day for using the Rangers' Web site to offer exclusive access to games and merchandise, the lawsuit said. In that case, the Garden complied with the NHL's demands and removed the material from its site.
iPhone's Bluetooth Bug Under Hackers' Microscope (PC World)
Almost lost in the hubbub over Thursday's iPhone firmware update and whether it would "brick" unlocked phones was the fact that Apple Inc. patched 10 vulnerabilities– twice the number of fixes issued since the phone's June debut. ADVERTISEMENT
The iPhone 1.1.1 update, which like previous upgrades is delivered through Apple's iTunes software, fixes seven flaws in the built-in Safari browser, two in the smart phone's Mail application and one in its use of Bluetooth, the short-range wireless technology. The seven Safari vulnerabilities include several cross-site scripting (XSS) flaws, one that can disclose the URL of other viewed pages– an online banking site, say– and another that lets attackers execute malicious JavaScript in pages delivered by the SSL-encrypted HTTPS protocol. One of the Safari flaws, and an associated vulnerability in Mail, involve "tel:" links, which can be exploited by hackers to dial a number without the user confirming the call. But it was the Bluetooth bug that got the attention of security researchers. Symantec's DeepSight threat network team pointed out the vulnerability in an advisory to customers Friday. "Reportedly, the Bluetooth flaw occurs when malicious Service Discovery Protocol (SDP) packets are handled; any attacker that is within Bluetooth range can exploit it remotely," wrote DeepSight analyst Anthony Roe in the alert. "Successful exploits are reported to allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code." According to Apple's security advisory, the Bluetooth bug was discovered and reported by Kevin Mahaffey and John Hering of Flexillis Inc., a Los Angeles-based company that specializes in mobile security development and consulting. Flexillis may be best known for its reverse engineering of the exploit used to hack into several celebrities' T-Mobile cell phone accounts in 2005, include Paris Hilton and Vin Diesel. The Bluetooth bug may prove to be dangerous to iPhones, Roe speculated, since the potential range of the technology is much greater than most people think. While Bluetooth's potential range– and thus the maximum distance between attacker and victim– is about 400 feet, "Several proof-of-concept Bluetooth antennas have intercepted Bluetooth signals at almost a mile," he said. Roe also pointed out that HD Moore, the driving force behind the Metasploit penetration framework, had recently demonstrated that shellcode could be run on an iPhone. Moore, said Roe, proved that "exploiting security vulnerabilities affecting the iPhone is by no means out of reach." In a post to his blog– and to the Metasploit site– on Wednesday, Moore said that because every process on the iPhone runs as root, and so has full privileges to the operating system, any exploit of an iPhone application vulnerability, such as Safari or Mail or Bluetooth, would result in a complete hijack of the device. Moore also announced that he would add iPhone support to Metasploit, which would make it much easier for hackers to access a vulnerable phone. Moore acknowledged that he's looking at the Bluetooth vulnerability. "The Bluetooth SDP vulnerability is the only issue I am focusing on," he said in an e-mail Friday. He also hinted that locating vulnerable iPhones wouldn't be a problem. "The Bluetooth MAC [media address control] address is always one less than the Wi-Fi interface's MAC address," he said. "Since the iPhone is always probing for or connected to its list of known access points, the presence of the iPhone and its Bluetooth MAC address can be determining by using a standard Wi-Fi sniffer. "Once the Bluetooth MAC address is obtained, the SDP issue can be exploited by anyone within range of the Bluetooth chip, or within range of the attacker's antenna, which can be up to a mile away in some cases," he said. If Moore manages to craft an exploit and add it to Metasploit, it's probable that criminal hackers will quickly follow. "Once we see something in Metasploit, we know it's likely we'll see it used in attacks," Alfred Huger, vice president of engineering with Symantec's security response group, said in a July interview. Jarno Neimela, a senior researcher with F-Secure Corp., a Helsinki-based security vendor, also hit the alarm button, but for a different reason. In a posting to his company's blog Friday, Neimela pointed out that there's no security software available for the iPhone, thanks to Apple's decision to keep the device's inner workings a secret. "The amount of technical information [available about the iPhone] makes it likely that sooner or later someone will create a worm or some other malware," Neimela said. "This will create an interesting problem for the security field as the iPhone is currently a closed system and it's not feasible to provide anti-virus or other third-party security solutions for it. "So if someone were able to create a rapidly spreading worm on the iPhone, protecting users against it would be problematic." Although iPhone owners will be automatically notified in the next week that the new patches are ready to download and install, a large number of those who have modified or unlocked their phones will probably forgo the fixes, since the 1.1.1 update apparently also disables unlocked phones and wipes unauthorized third-party applications that have been added with various hacks.
